BUNAC Educational Scholarship Trust

Charles Braver Language Exploration Grants
The Charles Braver Language Exploration Grant offers one award of $500 each for summer, fall, and spring sessions for students who enroll in any regular SRAS program. It's intended to offset the costs of SRAS study abroad programs for students who demonstrate clear goals in gaining an understanding of Russia – the country, its people, and its language. The grant is dedicated in memory of Charles Braver, an educator who worked for many years to promote and practice cross- cultural teaching, learning, and geographical and intellectual exploration. Eligibility: Students must enroll in an SRAS program (http://www.sras.org/programs) and must have completed two semesters of Russian, Chinese, or the study of any Central Asian language. The applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must be enrolled full time in an academic program based in North America or the European Union when applying.

CIEE Global Access Initiative [GAIN] Scholarship
CIEE created the Global Access Initiative (GAIN) to help students overcome the major barriers to studying abroad, namely costs and curriculum requirements. GAIN aids in the diversification of study abroad by providing overseas opportunities for students who are economically challenged, or from diverse backgrounds or underrepresented fields of study. Each year, CIEE provides $1 million in grants and scholarships to expand access for students to full-year, semester, and summer study abroad programs.

IAF Grassroots Development Fellowship Program
Candidates for Ph.D. degrees from United States universities as they conduct their dissertation research, who are citizens of the United States or of an independent country in Latin America or the Caribbean, are eligible for the IAF Fellowships. The Michele Lavagnilio Charitable Service Scholarship is designed for the Athena student who best demonstrates commitment to a charitable service in his or her community. The student should have a history of taking the initiative and making the world a better place through service. The scholarship is in honor of Michele Lavagnilio who helped children with autism through the Cireneo Onlus Foundation. Tragically, Michele passed at the age of 25 in the devastating earthquake of 2009 in L’Aquilia, Italy. Recipients will have the privilege of meeting his parents while in Italy.

This Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship for Studies in Tropical Biology was established, with the consent of her parents, in the memory of Jennifer Ritzmann, a 1998 fall participant in the Tropical Biology program in Monteverde, Costa Rica, and a junior from Ohio University whose life was taken in a tragic accident. Jennifer’s dream was to do forestry work in Costa Rica and she was committed to preserving the rain forest. It is our hope that through this scholarship we will be able to help other students with similar dreams and goals achieve what Jennifer was only able to begin to realize.

The John E. Bowman Travel Grants were established in memory of John E. Bowman, executive director of CIEE from 1952 to 1979. These awards provide assistance to students participating in CIEE study abroad programs in non-traditional locations by helping to defray the costs of travel.

Qalam wa Lawh Center for Arabic Studies
Selected students will receive a full scholarship to be immersed in intensive Arabic language classes as well as other cultural programs such as cooking, calligraphy, and trips to venues of cultural interest and significance throughout Morocco. The Peter Wollitzer Scholarship for Study in Asia was established by the Ping Foundation in 2006 in memory of Peter Wollitzer, regional director of the university-wide office of the University of California Education Abroad Program. Short-Term Service Scholarship
The purpose of the short- term service scholarship is to promote Athena’s valued dedication to charity and the idea of giving back. To apply for the scholarship Athena students must devote a day towards a service project of their choosing. During the project, applicants should have a photo taken to be sent in as part of their application. The other portion of the application is a 200 word essay explaining the project, why it was chosen, and what the student learned from the experience.

On the basis of that educational program, SRAS will assist the student in obtaining the proper visa and affordable housing, obtaining health insurance, and gaining official Russian university affiliation (needed to gain access to many archives. Optional research services can assist in locating translators and experts in the field, navigating archives, etc.). In addition, depending on the program chosen, it will provide lessons in language and other subjects. Eligibility: Upperclassmen (juniors and seniors), graduate and postgraduate students in any field of study may apply. The applicant must have a GPA of 3.2 or above and must be enrolled in an academic program based in North America or the European Union when applying. Study Abroad Europe Scholarship
Study Abroad Europe scholarship offers awards that range from $250 to $1,000 per session. Fall, Spring, Academic Year and Summer students are eligible to apply. Student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B average) or higher. All applicants will be notified of scholarship decisions 3-5 weeks after the scholarship application deadline.

The purpose of the SWEA New Jersey Scholarship is to support a person in their studies or their efforts to advance/share knowledge of Swedish culture, traditions, language, history, or society. We are primarily looking for a student from New Jersey or its near surrounding states or someone who studies in New Jersey or its near surrounding states. Translation: The Reset Grant
In a small effort to improve the quality of the world's translations, SRAS offers one $500 grant each semester to help young translators go abroad to study their craft. Eligibility: Students who enroll in Translate Abroad (http://www.sras.org/internship_russian_translation) are eligible for the grant. Just write one paragraph in Russian about why you want to become a translator or why you think the world needs better translators. Submit this paragraph with your two writing samples when applying for Translate Abroad to be eligible for the grant.

University Language Services Study Abroad Scholarship
College students: What makes you glad that you decided to study abroad?Take a photo of it for a chance to win a $500.00 college scholarship! Universum
In addition to the Assistantships, Universum offers 4 scholarships. The scholarship covers 25-100% of tuition fees for two years. Scholarship holders are obliged to volunteer in college or community projects for 200 hours during two years.
